Western States Boiler & Combustion Controls (WSB) is seeking an experienced senior-level boiler and controls technician to support our growing field service operations. This role includes commissioning, troubleshooting, combustion tuning, controls work, and customer and sales team support across a wide range of industrial boiler and burner systems. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, communicates clearly, and can operate independently in a variety of field conditions. This position requires a seasoned, hands-on technician with deep experience across boilers, burners, combustion systems, and multiple burner management control systems. The ideal candidate takes pride in technical excellence, communicates professionally with customers, and can function independently in the field. This role also contributes to developing consistent service practices and standards as WSB's service capabilities continue to grow. Key Responsibilities Technical and Field Work * Lead combustion tuning, burner adjustments, and performance optimization on a wide range of industrial boilers, burners, and ancillary equipment. * Perform advanced troubleshooting across mechanical, electrical, controls, and fuel-train systems. * Install, commission, and support burner, boiler, and controls retrofit projects, ensuring all equipment is set up correctly and operates to specification. * Lead commissioning and startup of boilers, burners, economizers, controls upgrades, and ancillary boiler-room equipment. * Conduct annual inspections, teardowns, internal assessments, and field repairs. * Diagnose and resolve issues involving Siemens, Fireye, Cleaver-Brooks Hawk, Autoflame, and other common steam boiler control systems, including servos, oxygen trim, and related components. * Handle service documentation, tuning logs, inspection reports, and repair recommendations with consistency and accuracy. * Troubleshoot, service, and support deaerators, feedwater systems, pumps, valves, safety devices, and other steam-plant auxiliaries. * Verify proper system integration between boilers, burners, controls, gas trains, feedwater equipment, and plant utilities during commissioning and service work. Customer Interaction * Represent WSB during site visits, troubleshooting calls, and commissioning projects. * Build and maintain professional relationships with facility managers, maintenance teams, engineers, and contractors. * Communicate findings, recommendations, and technical issues clearly to customers and internal staff. * Set clear expectations with customers regarding timelines, findings, and next steps, and follow through consistently on commitments. * Take ownership of the customer experience during service visits, ensuring communication is timely, accurate, and proactive. Leadership and Department Development * Support the development of future service capabilities and field procedures. * Contribute to standard operating procedures, checklists, service documentation, and commissioning protocols. * Assist in mentoring junior technicians as the department grows. * Provide technical input for sales and project management during scopes, estimates, and retrofit planning as needed. Cross-Functional Support * Support sales and project management with technical insights, job walks, equipment evaluations, and project planning. * Work closely with sales and project management to understand project scopes and assist in developing accurate retrofit and service proposals. * Assist in building realistic scopes of work, identifying required parts, and preparing equipment for commissioning. * Collaborate with WSB leadership to refine service offerings and strengthen service operations. Required Skills and Experience * Seven to ten years of field experience servicing, repairing, and commissioning industrial boilers and burners. * Strong combustion and burner tuning experience across multiple burner manufacturers. * Proficiency with burner management and combustion control systems including Siemens, Fireye, CB Hawk, Autoflame, and other common platforms. * Ability to troubleshoot boiler, burner, electrical, and controls-related issues. * Knowledge of steam-plant systems including deaerators, feedwater equipment, pumps, valves, and safety devices. * Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, and OEM documentation. * Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and customer interaction. * High level of professionalism, reliability, and independent decision-making in the field. * Solid understanding of safety procedures including lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work, and pressure-system safety. Preferred Qualifications * Experience with Oilon burners, Power Flame burners, Victory Energy boilers, Lattner boilers, Unilux boilers, BFS Industries equipment, and other common OEMs. * Controls networking or integration experience including Modbus, RS-485, fieldbus systems, or building management system communication. * Refractory inspection or repair experience. * Prior leadership, mentoring, or training experience. * OEM training or certifications related to combustion, controls, or boiler equipment.
