Sales Field Applications Engineer - CBC (Seattle, WA)
Job Description
Based in Seattle, you'll support and win thermal design-ins with hyperscale customers--primarily Microsoft and AWS--and their ODM/OEM partners. This role is deeply technical and requires strong Mechanical or Electrical Engineering expertise, especially in thermal systems, airflow/pressure, cooling architectures, and component-level hardware. You'll meet customers on campus and in labs, translate engineering requirements into accurate proposals and validation plans, and guide programs from concept through MP. Work closely with our R&D and manufacturing teams in Asia to ensure builds, tests, and schedules proceed smoothly. Own the technical relationship, the engineering follow-through, and the program execution. If you enjoy customer-facing engineering, problem solving, and system-level thermal work, you'll excel. Mechanical/Electrical Engineering background is strongly preferred; Mandarin/English bilingual is required.
Responsibilities
- Prospect, qualify, and support new engineering-driven opportunities at Microsoft, AWS, and their ODM/OEM ecosystem.
- Meet customers on-site (Redmond/Seattle campuses, labs) to present thermal hardware, gather detailed mechanical/electrical requirements, and align next steps.
- Build strong relationships with engineering teams (thermal, mechanical, electrical, HWPM) through design reviews, validation discussions, and technical checkpoints.
- Turn mechanical/electrical/thermal requirements into proposals, technical specs, quotes, and well-defined sample/validation plans; manage RFIs/RFQs.
- Drive design-ins from concept to MP; support EVT/DVT/PVT builds, thermal validation, CFD/airflow discussions, mechanical fit checks, and reliability testing.
- Coordinate daily with Asia-based thermal engineering, mechanical/electrical design teams, and manufacturing on builds, test schedules, and escalations.
- Track technical issues, test data, POs, and shipments; lead root-cause discussions and drive corrective actions with engineering teams.
- Maintain accurate CRM notes, engineering status, and forecasting inputs; deliver updates on schedule.
- Follow up after delivery to confirm thermal, mechanical, and electrical performance; ensure customer qualification success and close remaining action items.
- Provide first-line technical support across airflow, acoustics, heat dissipation, cold plate design, liquid/hybrid systems, manifolds, CDUs, electrical interfaces, and reliability topics.
- Monitor customer platform roadmaps, cooling architecture shifts (air -> liquid/hybrid), and competing thermal technologies; adjust engineering focus accordingly.
- Feed technical feedback, product requirements, and cost/TCO insights to the product roadmap team.
- Stay current on AI-server thermal engineering: airflow/pressure, heat sinks, cold plates, manifolds, CDUs, coolant behavior, rack architectures, mechanical integration constraints, and qualification standards.
- Build and execute a Seattle/Pacific Northwest engineering support plan; coordinate closely with other U.S. FAEs and sales teams. Experience:
- 5+ years as an FAE, Sales Engineer, Thermal/Mechanical Engineer, or technical BD role supporting hyperscale/server hardware.
- Strong Mechanical or Electrical Engineering foundation is required--experience with thermal systems, airflow/pressure, mechanical packaging, heat transfer, or liquid-cooling technology strongly preferred.
- Seattle-area based with regular onsite customer visits and ~25-40% travel (including Asia).
- Existing working relationships with engineering, hardware program management, and sourcing/vendor management at Microsoft/AWS (or ODM partners).
- Hands-on experience with hyperscale development cycles: RFI/RFQ, onboarding, NDA/MSA/SOW, EVT/DVT/PVT, thermal validation, reliability testing, pilot/MP builds, ECO/PCN.
- Demonstrated ability to work with mechanical drawings, electrical schematics/interfaces, thermal data, CFD outputs, and design reviews.
- Strong discipline in documentation, CRM hygiene, engineering follow-through, and on-time reporting.
- Comfortable working across Asia time zones (early/late calls as needed).
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering (ME/EE) is strongly preferred; other engineering backgrounds considered if technically relevant.
- Able to clearly communicate engineering concepts: airflow/pressure, heat transfer, acoustics, structural considerations, electrical control of cooling systems, cold plate architecture, manifolds, and rack-level thermal behavior.
- Mandarin/English bilingual is required for daily engineering coordination with Asia. Preferred Experience:
- Design-in wins involving mechanical or electrical thermal hardware, such as high-performance fans, heat sinks, cold plates, manifolds, CDUs, or integrated air-to-liquid cooling systems.
- Familiarity with server/rack mechanical integration, airflow modeling, and electrical interfaces related to cooling systems.
- Experience supporting hyperscale qualification stages (EVT/DVT/PVT -> MP), including mechanical validation, thermal characterization, and reliability testing.
- Understanding of rack-level thermal/power constraints and data-center environmental conditions.
- Proven success driving engineering programs from first technical meeting to MP with measurable performance and revenue results.
- Experience with NRE/tooling, technical quoting, SOWs, and VA/VE engineering-driven cost reduction strategies.
- Comfortable navigating customer/supplier engineering portals (Ariba, Microsoft/AWS vendor systems).
