Job Title: Professional Development Director (Law Firm) Location: Manhattan, NY Pay Range: $175,000 - $215,000 Employment Type: Full-Time/Direct Hire Work Schedule: 4 days onsite, 1 day work from home Position Overview The Director of Business Development is a senior leadership role responsible for designing, executing, and governing the firms business development strategy to support revenue growth, client expansion, and market positioning. This position plays a critical role in ensuring business development efforts are disciplined, strategically aligned, and directly connected to measurable business outcomes. Serving as a trusted advisor to firm leadership and key partner-originators, the Director provides strategic guidance on client development, industry engagement, and investment decisions. The role brings a commercial, consultative mindset to the firms go-to-market efforts by helping attorneys proactively pursue new client opportunities, deepen existing relationships, and convert strategic conversations into retained work. This role is central to shifting business development from activity-driven efforts to outcome-focused investment, consistent with best practices in sophisticated professional services organizations. The Director works closely with senior leadership, practice leaders, and attorneys, as well as marketing and communications leadership, to align business development strategy, execution, and budget allocation with firmwide priorities. Business Development Philosophy Business development is defined as the deliberate process of earning the right to win work not generalized networking or passive visibility. Investment in business development is prioritized when it creates competitive advantage and supports revenue generation, relationship expansion, and market leadership. The Director is responsible for guiding and enforcing this framework, ensuring that business development efforts support one or more of the following outcomes: * Near-term revenue or a credible, defined pipeline * Expansion of existing client relationships and cross-practice engagement * Enhanced positioning within priority industries and markets * Authority-building initiatives tied directly to practice growth * Increased share of wallet within key client relationships * Improved conversion of high-value prospects into active matters Key Responsibilities Firmwide Business Development Strategy * Develop, implement, and continuously refine the firms business development strategy in alignment with firmwide objectives. * Serve as a senior advisor to partner-originators on business development planning and client growth. * Lead individualized business development plans for key partners with defined revenue and pipeline goals. * Drive disciplined opportunity development by helping partners identify targets, prioritize prospects, and execute structured pursuit strategies. Governance of Business Development Investment * Own and administer the firms business development investment and approval framework. * Evaluate investment requests based on strategic alignment, access to decision- makers, engagement strategy, follow-up plans, and revenue potential. * Educate attorneys on best-in-class business development principles and ROI- driven decision-making. * Coach attorneys on converting engagement into sustained client relationships and revenue growth. Client Development & Industry Positioning * Advance industry-focused initiatives that place attorneys in front of senior decision-makers. * Prioritize conferences, sponsorships, and events that provide leadership roles and controlled engagement opportunities. * Support authority-building initiatives directly tied to practice and industry growth. * Assist attorneys in translating market positioning into business conversations through messaging, outreach strategies, and engagement planning. Client Expansion & Cross-Selling * Lead initiatives to deepen and expand existing client relationships. * Collaborate with relationship partners to identify cross-selling opportunities across practices. * Support strategies that increase share of wallet, strengthen client retention, and uncover new matters. Marketing Operations, Analytics & Technology * Oversee business development and marketing operations. * Establish KPIs to measure ROI, pipeline development, and client growth. * Lead CRM and client intelligence platform implementation and adoption. * Track and report on opportunity progression and conversion to ensure efforts translate into measurable results. Leadership & Budget Management * Lead, develop, and mentor the business development and marketing team. * Manage the business development and marketing budget in collaboration with firm leadership. * Partner closely with communications and public relations leadership. * Support pitch strategy, proposal development, and competitive differentiation in high-value pursuits. Qualifications * Demonstrated success in a sophisticated law firm or comparable professional services environment. * Credibility with partners and senior leadership. * Strategic, analytical, and commercially oriented mindset. * Excellent executive-level communication and relationship-building skills. * Proven experience leading and developing high-performing teams. * Sound judgment, discretion, and professional maturity. * Demonstrated ability to support attorney-led sales processes and structured opportunity development. Education & Experience * Bachelors degree required; advanced degree preferred. * Minimum of five (5) years of progressive business development experience within a law firm or professional services environment. * Experience with CRM systems and data-driven business development practices. * Experience supporting targeting, pipeline management, pitch preparation, and conversion strategy. Working Conditions & Travel * Exempt position; may require work outside standard business hours. * Professional office environment. * Periodic travel required.
