Full description of the position
About Sterling Insurance Group Sterling Insurance Group is an independent, growth-focused property & casualty insurance agency with two distinct but complementary brands : * Sterling Insurance Group of Boston - serving high-net-worth (HNW) families, successful professionals, and specialized commercial clients with tailored, concierge-style insurance solutions. * Soo Hoo Insurance - a community-focused brand serving Mandarin and Cantonese-speaking business owners, restaurateurs, and families across Greater Boston with culturally competent, personalized insurance advice. We are a small, established, and ambitious agency committed to personalized service, cultural competence, and integrity. Our team works collaboratively across both brands to serve our diverse client base authentically and professionally. We're hiring an Insurance Agent in Training who enjoys working with diverse, multicultural client bases and genuinely cares about helping people protect what matters to them. No insurance experience required --we'll train you. Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese is a strong plus--but we're also interested in English speakers with genuine affinity for Asian cultures and a willingness to learn. Applicants of all language backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The Role - What You'll Learn As an Insurance Agent in Training at Sterling Insurance Group , you will: * Learn to serve both Sterling Insurance Group and Soo Hoo Insurance clients - building genuine relationships with HNW families, Mandarin and Cantonese-speaking business owners, restaurateurs, and families * Be trained to consult and educate clients on insurance needs across: * Personal lines: auto, home, umbrella, and high-value coverage for HNW clients * Commercial lines: restaurant liability, business property, general liability, and coverage for small business owners * Master the fundamentals: how to quote, bind, and service policies with accuracy, professionalism, and care (we teach you step-by-step) * Handle renewals and follow-ups proactively--reaching out to clients about coverage updates, better options, or changes in their situation * Represent Sterling Insurance Group with integrity , embodying our commitment to honest, transparent service and cultural competence * Learn to use insurance technology --AMS systems, quoting tools, email, and client management platforms (comprehensive training provided) * Develop problem-solving skills by working through real client scenarios with guidance from experienced agents * Learn continuously --about insurance products, coverage nuances, carrier offerings, and industry best practices * Collaborate with your team to ensure seamless service across both brands and client segments * Build cultural bridges between Sterling's diverse client base, learning about client backgrounds, values, and communication preferences This is a people-first role. You'll spend most of your time listening to clients, understanding their concerns, and helping them feel confident in their coverage. Your success depends on building trust, following through, and genuinely caring about client outcomes. What We're Looking ForRequired Qualifications * English fluency (verbal and written) - to communicate effectively with clients, team members, and to document policies accurately * Property & Casualty Insurance License (or ability and willingness to obtain within 60 days--we support you through the licensing process) * Ability to commute to Boston, MA 02111 consistently for in-person work (training is hands-on and in-person) * Work authorization in the USA Preferred Qualifications (One or More - Not Required) * Fluency in Mandarin and/or Cantonese (verbal and written) - essential for deepening relationships with Soo Hoo Insurance clients * Basic conversational ability in Mandarin and/or Cantonese (or willingness to learn) - helpful for building rapport and showing respect to clients * Lived experience or cultural affinity with Asian communities (family background, long-term residence, meaningful relationships) * Previous customer service experience in any industry (retail, hospitality, banking, healthcare, etc.) * Sales or relationship-building experience (not required, but helpful) * Demonstrated commitment to learning about different cultures and communication styles Essential Personal Traits (More Important Than Experience) You genuinely enjoy helping people. You feel energized when you solve someone's problem or help them avoid a bad situation. You don't see it as "just a job"--you take pride in making people feel supported and understood, whether they're a wealthy family or a small restaurant owner. You follow through. When you say you'll do something, you do it. When you promise to call someone back, you call them back. People trust you because you keep your word. You're detail-oriented and conscientious. You catch small errors before they become big problems. You double-check your work. You understand that getting details right matters, especially when it affects someone's coverage. You communicate clearly and patiently. You're comfortable explaining things to people who don't understand insurance (most people!). You ask questions to make sure you understand what they need. You're patient with people who are learning or who speak English as a second language. You listen more than you talk. You have genuine curiosity about different cultures. Whether you're multilingual or not, you're interested in understanding people's backgrounds, values, and how they prefer to communicate. You ask respectful questions. You don't make assumptions. You genuinely want to serve people in a way that feels authentic to them. You take initiative without being told. You notice things that need doing, and you do them. You speak up when you see a problem or have an idea. You don't wait for permission to help someone. You respect structure and are eager to learn. You understand that insurance is regulated and has rules. You're willing to follow processes and procedures. You ask questions when you don't know something. You want to get better at your job every day. You value your team. You work well with others. You help colleagues when they're busy. You appreciate that everyone brings different strengths. You take pride in being part of a team that serves diverse clients. What We'll Teach You Month 1 -2: Insurance Fundamentals & Licensing * Support you through your Property & Casualty licensing exam * Train on insurance basics: coverages, carriers, policies, terminology * Shadow experienced agents on client calls and meetings * Learn Sterling's service philosophy and both brand identities Month 3 -4: Quoting, Binding, and Service * Learn to use AMS, quoting tools, and carrier portals * Quote personal and commercial policies with guidance * Handle client service requests (endorsements, certificates, renewals) * Begin building your own client relationships Month 5 -6: Client Ownership and Growth * Take ownership of assigned client accounts * Conduct renewal reviews and identify coverage gaps * Proactively reach out to clients about their changing needs * Begin learning sales and business development Ongoing: * Product training from carriers * Mentorship from ownership and senior agents * Continuing education for license renewal and designations (CIC, CPCU if interested) * Language learning support (if interested in Mandarin/Cantonese) Why This Role Is Great for You * Career entry into a stable, growing industry - insurance is essential; independent agencies are thriving * Comprehensive training - you don't need experience; we teach you everything * Serve your community and beyond - help both Mandarin/Cantonese-speaking clients and HNW families * Real autonomy over time - once trained, you own your client relationships and can grow your book of business * Clear path forward - strong performers move into full agent roles, then sales leadership, account management, or business development * Small agency culture - you work directly with ownership; you'll know everyone and be valued * Cultural growth - learn about Asian business cultures, restaurant industry dynamics, and immigrant entrepreneurship firsthand * Professional development - we invest in your licensing, training, and career growth Compensation & Benefits * Base Salary: $62,400-$65,000 per year (guaranteed during training period and beyond) * Performance Bonus: Eligible for bonus based on client satisfaction, renewals, and new business development (as you grow in the role) * Health & Wellness: * Medical insurance * 401(k) with employer matching * Time Off: * Paid time off (PTO) * Professional Development: * We reimburse for your Property & Casualty licensing exam and study materials * Support for continuing education and license renewal * Product training and carrier certifications * Mentorship from experienced agents * Opportunity to develop expertise across both Sterling Insurance Group and Soo Hoo Insurance * Language learning support (if interested in building Mandarin/Cantonese skills) Ideal Backgrounds (But Not Required) We've successfully trained agents who came from: * Customer service (retail, hospitality, call centers) * Banking or financial services (tellers, personal bankers) * Sales (retail, B2B, real estate) * Healthcare (patient coordinators, medical assistants) * Education (teachers, tutors) * Career changers looking for a stable, people-focused career * Recent college graduates * Bilingual professionals seeking to serve their community What matters most: your attitude, work ethic, and genuine care for people --not your resume.
