Full description of the position
The Outside Sales Representative is responsible for driving sales growth and customer growth throughout the market and territory serviced by their assigned Guy C Lee location. This role is built for a hunter, someone who loves being out in the market, on jobsites, in trucks and trailers yards, and in builder offices, actively looking for new opportunities while strengthening existing relationships. The Outside Sales Representative will spend much of their time in the field calling on builders, remodelers, contractors, and multi-family developers. This role will protect and grow existing accounts in addition to opening new customers and gaining new business. This is a key revenue-driving role with clear expectations to contribute meaningfully to top-line sales growth and new customer development. Work Hours o Monday-Friday - Approx. 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM (*times may vary) o Clayton Store Hours: Monday - Thursday: 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM | Friday: 7:00 AM - 1:00 PM o Some evenings to attend various customer, association, or company sponsored events Responsibilities Include (but are not limited to): New Business Development o Proactively prospect and hunt for new business across the store service area and local market. o Identify & qualify new customers through cold calls, site visits, networking, and industry events. o Build and maintain a strong opportunity pipeline and convert prospects into long-term customers. Relationship Management o Serve as the primary point of contact for accounts in your territory, focusing on builders, contractors, and remodelers. o Develop deep relationships with key decision-makers (owners, superintendents, project managers, purchasing, etc.). o Maintain regular in-person contact via jobsite visits, yard visits, office calls, and walk-throughs of current and upcoming projects. Territory & Account Growth o Understand each customer's business, product mix, and project pipeline to anticipate needs. o Grow share of wallet with existing accounts by recommending Guy C Lee solutions across product categories (lumber, windows, doors, installed sales, siding, decking, millwork, etc.). o Monitor competitor activity in the market and develop strategies to win and retain accounts. Jobsite & Market Presence o Regularly visit active job sites for prospecting and managing existing business o Confirm deliveries and product performance. o Identify add-on opportunities and future phases. o Deliver small orders of materials (as needed) and utilize opportunity to meet with customers. o Meet new project stakeholders and decision-makers. o Stay current on local building trends, subdivisions, multi-family developments, and remodel activity. Collaboration & Internal Coordination o Work closely with the team members (sales coordinator, purchasing, dispatch, installed sales, and management) to ensure accurate quotes, on-time deliveries, and strong service. o Provide clear communication on customer expectations, project timelines, and special requirements. o Use sales tracking tools to document activity, pipeline, and progress toward goals. Performance & Reporting o Meet or exceed assigned sales, margin, and new account goals within the territory. o Provide regular updates on key accounts, pipeline opportunities, and market conditions to branch and regional leadership. o This role reports to the Regional Sales Manager What You Will Need High school diploma or GED. 3+ years of outside sales experience in building materials industry Proven track record of hunting, prospecting, and closing new business Strong relationship-building skills with contractors, builders, and remodelers Excellent communication and time management skills Ability to read basic blueprints, take-offs, or interpret project specs Valid driver's license and clean driving record Good computer skills including proficiency with MS Office programs and web- based ordering systems.
