Summary The Director of Business Development is responsible for driving the firm's growth by identifying and cultivating new client relationships, deepening referral partnerships, and increasing brand awareness in target markets. This person actively builds and manages a robust pipeline, driving the full sales cycle from identifying prospects to closure. This leader cultivates trust- based relationships and develops our Circle of Influence (COI) network, assisting in workshop presentations, along with attending conferences, events, and networking opportunities. This role is ideal for a seasoned business development professional who thrives in consultative sales, understands the nuances of family businesses, and is passionate about making a meaningful impact in closely held enterprises. Key Responsibilities *Client Acquisition & Relationship Development * Develop and execute an annual sales plan to identify, pursue, and secure new business opportunities with family-owned companies in the $5M-$150M+ revenue range. * Build and maintain a robust pipeline, within our CRM, of qualified prospects, primarily business owners, CEOs, and family decision-makers. * Conduct discovery meetings to understand client needs and recommend appropriate service offerings. * Collaborate with the consulting team to develop tailored proposals and scopes of work. * Maintain strong relationships throughout the sales cycle, from introduction to signed engagement. * Frequent travel throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to meet with prospects, customers, and COIs, along with tradeshows, association events, etc * Work closely with the Compass Point CEO, Partners, and Regional Directors to pursue activities and prospects that achieve our sales objectives. Partnership & Network Development * Establish and nurture strategic relationships with trusted advisors to family businesses, including wealth advisors, attorneys, accountants, and other centers of influence. * Represent the firm at networking events, industry conferences, and professional associations to increase visibility and generate leads. * Develop referral systems and co-marketing opportunities with key partners. Marketing & Thought Leadership * Serve as a compelling ambassador of the Compass Point brand, representing the firm with authenticity, credibility, and enthusiasm at all touchpoints. * Collaborate with marketing team to develop campaigns, events, and content that attract target clients. * Contribute insights and thought leadership for blogs, webinars, and client communications. * Track and report on KPIs to evaluate the effectiveness of business development strategies. We 're looking for a relationship-builder who brings warmth, curiosity, and clarity to every interaction -- someone who doesn't "sell," but who connects, listens, and leads. What you will need * 7+ years of experience in business development, consultative sales, or professional services. * Deep understanding of family-owned businesses, their unique challenges, and dynamics. * Demonstrated success in building relationships with business owners and C-level executives, and a network of COI's who service them. * Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to inspire trust, convey confidence, and engage CEOs and Business Owners in meaningful conversation. * Self-starter with high emotional intelligence, integrity, and a collaborative spirit. * Bachelor's degree in Business, Marketing, or a related field; advanced degree a plus. * Self-motivated, with the ability to work independently while also being a strong team player. * Accomplished and confident public speaker and ability to communicate our brand to diverse audiences. * Willingness to travel as needed.
