The Role

Do you possess comprehensive knowledge of building code regulation, zoning laws, and construction practices? Can you effectively communicate complex information to diverse stakeholders, including City Council members and community leaders? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you.

The role of Senior Director Development Services is pivotal in shaping the growth and sustainability of a community. This senior leadership position involves overseeing and coordinating various departments related to building and planning & zoning within a municipal government setting. Reporting directly to the Mayor, the Senior Director provides strategic direction, managerial oversight, and operational guidance to ensure the effective delivery of development services.

Key Responsibilities:

• Executive management and leadership of Development Services departments including Building Department and Planning & Zoning.
• Oversight of administrative and business functions related to building code enforcement.
• Collaborating with Economic Development and Engineering departments to support new development.
• Ensuring City Council accountability, community relations, and strategic planning.
• Development and administration of budgets for Building and Planning & Zoning.
• Establishing organizational units within the department for efficient operation.
• Providing professional services related to construction projects and public policy development.

The Person

• Bachelors degree in Public Administration, Engineering, Architecture, Business Management, or related field.
• 10+ years of progressive experience with at least 5 years in leadership roles.
• Certification as a Building Official by the International Code Council is advantageous.
• Strong understanding of building code regulation, public administration, and budgeting.
• Comprehensive knowledge of construction practices, zoning regulations, and relevant laws.
• Ability to communicate effectively and present complex information clearly.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software applications.
