The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) owns and operates public seaport and intermodal facilities in Charleston, Dillon, and Greer. Our 950+ employees handle cargo, operate and maintain cargo handling equipment, manage port facilities and operations, and support the port system in a fast-paced 24/7 environment.
Job Summary
Generate and close new business via inside sales and telemarketing efforts, with a focus on expanding Ports Authority's market share with small and medium-sized clients, while also supporting the field sales team members.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Telemarket the entire country for new business opportunities, using PIERS data and other intelligence sources for leads. This includes using professional discretion in the targeting, intelligence gathering, sale, and closing of business essential to the port; and/or hand-off to sales according to department protocol. (40%)
- Work independently and in collaboration with the business development manager on port-dependent site location efforts including qualifying opportunities, working with economic development allies, direct sales to prospects, and owning certain projects through to closure. (20%)
- Provide other direct support for field sales and marketing staff as needed. (20%)
- Provide routine sales and business development services such as leading port tours and updating databases (local warehouses, industrial building construction, dray rates, truckers, etc.) (15%)
- Profile client business and record inside sales activity in Salesforce, our sales contact database. (This activity is an expectation built into all duties above so no % of time is dedicated to it here).
- Special research and marketing projects as assigned. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain, marketing, sales, communications, accounting or business administration or equivalent experience is required.
- A valid South Carolina driver’s license is required to operate a Ports Authority-owned licensed motor vehicle.
Skills and Abilities
- Must independently exercise good judgment and professional discretion in developing relationships with clients, collaborating with sales, closing sales opportunities, and handling pricing quotes/solutions for clients.
- Must possess drive for a career in sales as this position is the proving ground for the SCPA field sales team.
- Must be professional, persistent, and persuasive in communications.
- Must be fluent with MS Office applications, especially Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Must be reliable with a solid work ethic and a commitment to follow through.
- Must be highly organized.
- Must be able to work well in a team environment yet must be independently driven.
Preferred Qualifications
- Trade and/or maritime industry experience is highly desirable.
- Prior sales, sales support and marketing experience.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time
- Ability to walk, bend, stoop, kneel, push and pull
- Vision is required to analyze and process various forms and documents utilized within the framework of performing assigned tasks
- Hearing is required to adequately perform telecommunication functions
- Ability to verbally communicate clearly with vendors, customers, co-workers, etc.
- Ability to operate a computer keyboard and view a computer monitor screen
Successful candidates must meet the Federal requirements for obtaining a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). TWIC is a common identification credential for all personnel requiring unescorted access to secure areas of Maritime Transportation Security Administration (MTSA)-regulated facilities and vessels, and all mariners holding Coast Guard-issued Credentials. Applicant must be able to meet the Federal Requirements for obtaining a TWIC card.
