Full description of the position

The University of Virginia (UVA) seeks an experienced fundraising professional to serve as Director of Development for Medical Alumni within UVA Health Development . Reporting to the Associate Vice President for UVA Health Development, the Director of Development will lead a small team and serve as the lead fundraiser focused on medical alumni. They will work closely with the Dean and with the Medical Alumni Association (MAA) to strategically engage and solicit alumni donors. The Director of Development will play a key leadership role for UVA Health Development, a high-performing team that is on track to raise $1B as part of the Honor the Future Campaign by 2025. The UVA School of Medicine has an active and loyal alumni base of over 15,000 constituents and over 400 volunteers annually. Alumni are dedicated to enhancing the experience of our constituents by creating opportunities for mentoring, networking, scholarship, and philanthropy.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership
  • Hire and manage a team of three staff devoted to fundraising from medical alumni. Motivate and mentor high-performing gift officers with portfolios of 100+ constituents each.
  • Serve as key member of UVA Health Development Cabinet, collaborating with UVA Health Development colleagues to assure alignment and synergy in fundraising efforts.


Fundraising
  • Serve as the lead major and principal gift fundraiser for development team focused on medical alumni, managing a portfolio of donors and prospects. Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising program for medical education and research within the School of Medicine.
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a portfolio of UVA SOM Alumni who are principal and major gift prospects and donors to SOM believed to be capable of making principal and major gifts of $100K+.
  • Create and implement a transparent donor strategy to move prospective donors along the development continuum. Conduct discovery calls on potential new prospects to engage and increase their interest in and philanthropic involvement with the School of Medicine. Create regional strategy to deploy gift officer team in soliciting SOM alumni donors across the United States.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Alumni Association and Foundation on alumni and volunteer engagement for the School of Medicine.
  • Establish a consistent presence within assigned departments and programs, to build faculty and staff partnerships and promote a culture of philanthropy.
  • Develop and provide specialized training for faculty and staff about philanthropic practices and tactics. Coach faculty and staff so that they are well prepared to participate in development activities and prospect/donor relationships.
  • Develop and maintain an informed layperson's understanding of the science behind research and care in assigned programs. Act as a translator and synthesizer of ideas when needed to enhance communication between faculty and prospects/donors.

The Director of Development for Medical Alumni will join the University at an exciting time for UVA Health. UVA has made tremendous progress on a groundbreaking $5 billion Honor the Future capital campaign that will advance the priorities of every school and unit, support new and existing programs, and fund capital projects. UVA Health’s portion of Honor the Future is $1 billion, which supports initiatives in patient care, research, medical and nursing education, and community outreach and access to care. Honor the Future represents an investment in the ideas, people, and solutions that save lives and relieve suffering. UVA Health has raised over $675 million towards its goal, with over 2 years left in the campaign.

The Director will have the opportunity to build upon a legacy of fundraising success. In FY 22, UVA Health Development raised more than $75M, achieving our highest annual fundraising total for UVA Health in the current campaign and the second largest fundraising year in UVA Health history. This included over $61M in support of the School of Medicine for education, research, patient care, and community and equity initiatives.

Candidate Profile

The University seeks an energetic and charismatic fundraiser with a strong affinity for the mission and values of UVA Health and the University of Virginia, who can create a strong case for giving to UVA’s School of Medicine. Preferred candidates will have previous experience fundraising within higher education or a healthcare setting. They will demonstrate creativity in identifying prospects. A compelling candidate will have the desire to establish a foundation of excellence and will possess a proven record of meeting and exceeding goals and improving outcomes. They will also have demonstrated leadership skills and be able to create a highly stable and effective team by articulating clear goals and responsibilities and by providing feedback to support individual accountability.

Professional Experience
  • At least 8 years of experience with a proven record of successful major gift fundraising, ideally in a higher education or healthcare setting, is required.
  • Previous management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a dean and/or other senior leadership.
  • Personal track record of success in reaching and exceeding organizational goals.
  • Ability to draft persuasive and succinct major gift proposals.
  • Excellent administrative skills, including project management, organization, delegation, and prioritization.
  • Proven ability to establish objectives, set performance standards, and organize and motivate a team to achieve goals.
  • Experience motivating and collaborating successfully with volunteers.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships of trust and respect with staff, alumni, faculty, volunteers, and donors.
  • The Director will contribute to an environment that encourages diversity, equity, and inclusion. They must have command of cultural sensitivity and must value and embrace cultural and social differences.


Education
  • A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
