How will you CONTRIBUTE and GROW?
Under the leadership of the Area Vice President, the primary function of this job is to manage and direct the sales activities of International Sales Account Managers and Branch Managers in the selling of industrial, medical, and specialty gases and welding and safety supplies for the overall achievement of annual budgets. Serves as liaison between the sales department and other sales-related units. Overall responsibility for the critical issues of branch operations, staffing and profitability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The District Manager works safely in compliance with customer specifications, company and regulatory requirements.
Safety and Regulatory Compliance
  • Demonstrate and ensure staff alignment with Airgas Safety Pledge and 12 Life Saving Rules.
  • Exemplify, promote and develop safe work behaviors. Provide direct coaching to improve associates safety behaviors resulting in an improved safety culture.
  • Ensures overall compliance with U.S. laws and regulations governing both export and import transactions, and ensures compliance with related company policies and procedures.
  • Leads and promotes a strong safety culture, organizes safety meetings, and strictly enforces safety rules. Ensures all applicable regulatory (OSHA, FDA, EPA. DOT) requirements are met and applicable training and recordkeeping is performed to meet departmental and location deadlines.
  • Ensures compliance with all Specialty, Medical and Food Gas Standard Operating Procedures and ISO requirements.
Personnel / Personnel Development
  • Provide supervision of direct reports in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures and applicable laws.
  • Ensure sufficient sales staffing levels (Inside and Outside Sales); work with the Human Resources Department to develop recruitment, staff development and retention strategies.
  • Delegate duties and responsibilities when appropriate for increased business efficiency and staff development.
  • Accountable for interviewing, hiring and training associates; planning, assigning and directing work; managing performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Develop, coach and assist International Sales Account Managers and Branch Managers to achieve the highest safety standards and performance; achieve sales budget targets, and advise branch managers, distributors and vendors concerning sales and marketing techniques.
  • Consult with Human Resources to ensure subordinate complaints, disciplinary issues and performance deficiencies are properly addressed and documented in a timely manner.
Customer Service / Business Development
  • Ensure all customers receive quality customer service from sales and branch associates.
  • Work with the International Trade Compliance Analyst to develop and implement local trade compliance procedures and share with the associates involved in international shipments.
  • Implement training that is in alignment with the Airgas’ Corporate Trade Compliance Program.
  • Execute corporate trade compliance initiatives.
  • Monitor trade activity and ensure any identified gaps are addressed.
  • Work with the International Trade Compliance Analyst to address customer questions or issues related to international shipments.
  • Work with the International Trade Compliance Analyst to address customs brokers and freight forwarders whenever there are questions related to international shipments; provide clearance instructions to brokers/forwarders.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the information entered by brokers on customs filings.
  • Ensure all record keeping requirements are met as outlined by the Corporate Trade Compliance team.
  • Conduct routine proactive trade compliance risk reviews and work with the International Trade Compliance Analyst to design and implement effective internal controls to ensure acceptable levels of compliance.
  • Collaborate with the International Trade Compliance Analyst and the Corporate Trade Compliance team on internal and/or external risk-assessments or government audits.
  • Ensure all trade transactions within the business division comply with the requirements set forth in the import and export local procedures:
  • Properly screened (end-user/end-use)
  • Negotiated with the correct commercial Incoterms
  • Properly entered into SAP
  • Products are properly classified
  • Reviewed for proper valuations
  • Reviewed to determine if licenses are required
  • Screened against sanctions and embargoes
  • Properly coordinated with approved brokers/freight forwarders or other intermediaries
  • Reviewed to ensure all required shipping documentation is accurate and complete (commercial invoice, SLI, clearance instructions, certificates of origin, Hazmat declarations, BOLs, etc).
  • Properly filed with US Customs or Census when required.
  • Ensure customer inquiries are promptly and courteously handled, providing follow-up to ensure complete customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure customer inquiries related to billing problems, cylinder balances, order status, time of delivery, etc. are promptly and courteously handled; follow up as necessary.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the customer’s need and prepare a timely response to that need by quoting pricing, credit terms, estimated date of delivery to customer based on knowledge of the company's production and delivery schedules and properly using the company software program.
  • Penetrate existing customer base with all product lines normally inventoried by the Region.
  • Ensures customer complaints are swiftly resolved at the lowest level of the business when possible and escalated as appropriate.
  • Maintain knowledge of competition by gathering current marketplace information on pricing, products, new products, delivery schedules, merchandising techniques, etc.
  • Recommend changes in products, services and policy by evaluating results and competitive developments and having discussions with vendors.
Essential Functions:
  • Overall responsibility for area sales, sales growth, budgeting, gross margins, operating expenses, P & L responsibilities, safety, customer service, inventory, equipment, building and vehicles, community relations, accounts receivable and resolution of personnel issues.
Account Managers
  • Review monthly results via performance calculator with each Account Manager, and coach for improvement when needed.
  • Review market analysis to determine customer needs, volume potential, price schedules and discount rates; work with the Area Vice President to develop marketing campaigns to accommodate the goals of the company.
  • Coordinate sales distribution by working with the Area Vice President to establish sales territories, targets, and goals.
  • Maintain and upgrade selling skills of self and International Account Managers on technical/product knowledge and ensure existing customers are current on new products and processes.
Branch Managers
  • Review monthly results via performance dashboards with each Branch Manager and coach for improvement when needed.
  • Direct product simplification and standardization to eliminate unprofitable items from branch inventory.
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies and procedures.
  • Assist the Branch Manager with hiring, leading, supervising, evaluating, managing, motivating and training employees.
  • Assist International Sales Representatives in all areas, including but not limited to preparing quotes, maintaining all literature required, providing customer follow-up, and gathering sales leads.
  • Prepares market and competitor information, annual sales analysis and forecast for the Area Vice President.
  • Works with the Area Vice President to prepare the annual budget.
  • Monitors fiscal performance of the branches as compared to budget.
  • Works with Branch Manager to control branch expenditures and costs.
  • Oversees accurate completion of sales-related paperwork (shippers, invoices, cylinder audits, month end reports, etc.) in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate inventory levels.
  • Reviews contract price files quarterly.
  • Relates gross profit dollars and margins to gross profit requirements and budget.
  • Relates actual net income to budget.
  • Maintains actual gross profit to guidelines, as evidenced by monthly reports.
  • Responsible for appearance, cleanliness and functionality of facilities.
  • Meet and/or exceed Gross Margin budget by servicing existing accounts, obtaining orders, increasing sales volumes
  • Maintain an existing book of business and establish new accounts by planning and organizing daily work schedules to call on existing or potential customers/prospects.
  • Compiles list of prospective customers for use as sales leads, based on information from the internet, business directories, trade journals, and other sources.
  • Increase knowledge of potential and existing customers by studying the type of product and volume used, depending on the industry or trade factor, displaying or demonstrating product using tablet or samples and emphasizing sellable features.
  • Ensure International Sales Account Managers are able to explain the types of gases and their uses to customers.
  • Prepare sales contracts for orders obtained and submit them to appropriate company personnel.
  • Check accounts receivable status of existing accounts; communicate with credit and contact customers regarding overdue payment if appropriate.
  • Obtain approval from the credit department for new accounts.
  • Maintain knowledge of competition by gathering current marketplace information on pricing, products, new products, delivery schedules, merchandising techniques, etc.
  • Recommend changes in products, services and policy by evaluating results and competitive developments and discussions with vendors.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks with other technical people and vendors and participating in professional societies.
  • Protects the operation of the company by keeping financial, production, sales and marketing information and plans confidential.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, International Trade, Law or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Detailed understanding of federal and international regulations on industrial gas or safety equipment.
  • Strong understanding of the U.S. Export Control Laws.
  • Excellent computer skills with Google and/or MS Office applications: Word, Excel, PP.
  • Experience working with SAP is strongly preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires 3+ years of international trade compliance experience and strong demonstrated leadership skills.
  • 3+ years of experience selling specialty or industrial gases and equipment to independent distributors and customers.
  • Experience working in a team environment on collaborative projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing and maintaining trade compliance programs and initiatives.
  • In-depth experience in HTS and ECCN product classifications (safety equipment and gas industry preferred), and understanding Incoterms, USMCA and other FTA programs.
  • Industrial gas and/or safety equipment industry experience is strongly preferred.
  • Negotiating and selling skills required with a proven record of achieving or exceeding assigned sales goals.

  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent residency required.
  • Bilingual - Fluent in Spanish/English
  • Ability to interpret and comprehend U.S. import/export regulations.
