Full description of the position

The University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and experienced fundraising professional to fill the role of Assistant or Associate Director of Development. Reporting to the School's Executive Director of Development, the Assistant or Associate Director of Development will generate philanthropic support for UVA Engineering and join a growing, highly integrated and collaborative advancement team pursuing ambitious fundraising goals for the University's multi-billion dollar Honor the Future campaign.

The Assistant or Associate Director will:

  • Work with alumni, corporations, foundations and other key constituent prospects to solicit and secure blended six-figure and above major gifts for UVA Engineering.

  • Advance the mission, vision and short- and long-term goals of the University and UVA Engineering, including campaign priorities, using agreed-upon metrics and accountability.

  • Create and execute fund raising plans that utilize best practices in major giving including identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major/principal gift donors.

  • Serve as a member of the University Advancement team and collaborate with peers in prospect strategy development and prospect management.

  • Assist UVA Engineering leadership and the Executive Director in developing program funding priorities and cases for support.

  • Serve as team lead for one or more departments in UVA Engineering and staff School leadership through regular communication, collaboration and strategy development.

  • Travel nationally to establish long-term partnerships, create outstanding constituent experiences and strengthen existing relationships to fund immediate and long-term goals of the School and University.

This job will be filled at either the Assistant or the Associate level depending on the successful candidate's experience, knowledge and competencies. The ideal candidate for the Assistant Director will have at least three years of previous fundraising experience. The ideal candidate for the Associate Director will have five or more years of higher education fundraising experience with a track record of closing six and seven figure gifts.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least three years of previous fundraising experience.

  • Ability to effectively articulate the University's and the School's educational missions, strategic aims and fundraising programs; strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrated success with closing major gifts ($100K+).

  • Experience working in a significant fundraising campaign or capital campaign and meeting desired goals.

  • Experience managing high-level relationships.

  • Ability to use a database to maintain and review records and reports such as donor data, prospect contacts, solicitations and proposals; ability to solicit and close gifts of $100,000 and more.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a fundraising team.

  • Ability to travel frequently.

  • Valid driver's license.
