Overview
The Sales Engineer is responsible for growing and retaining market share of SAGE courseware products by helping to win competitive new adoptions, fulfilling technical requirements, and protecting our existing business. This is a cross-functional role that requires strong consultative selling and training skills, technical aptitude, and ability to thrive under pressure while solving complex problems for customers. Successful Sales Engineers are self-starters that possess an entrepreneurial mindset and desire to aggressively pursue new business. They also must have the interpersonal skills to build productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, as this role relies heavily on trust and collaboration with a diverse group of individuals.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Technical Sales
Lead and assist with technical sales presentations and demos for prospects that are considering SAGE courseware products within assigned territories
Ensure smooth transition of courseware adoptions from the sales process to the implementation process.
Track customer interactions and sales opportunity progress in our CRM.
Ensure SAGE courseware products achieve closed business, paid subscription, and annual revenue targets within assigned region.
Utilize CRM, Power BI, and other reporting tools so to prioritize sales opportunities and maximize revenue during sales adoption & ordering seasons.
Fulfillment and Onboarding
Manage communication during the implementation process to ensure on-time delivery and a high-level of client satisfaction.
Work with Implementation team to troubleshoot issues that could delay LMS integrations for key customers.
Coordinate tailored customer onboarding for VIP adoptions.
Ensure customers understand how to optimize benefits and usage of SAGE courseware.
Track student registrations and paid subscriptions during the start of each semester and take necessary action by collaborating with Sales team members.
Customer Success
Serve as primary point-of-contact for VIP adoptions within region and provide exceptional service during life of adoption.
Triage support issues and troubleshoot/escalate as needed to resolve.
Conduct ongoing retention outreach campaigns to ensure continued adoption of SAGE courseware products.
Leverage communication with existing customers to upsell, referral sell, and recruit new faculty advocates.
Internal Stakeholder Responsibilities
Provide technology-focused training and regular coaching for assigned sales team members to optimize their effectiveness with SAGE courseware products.
Collaborate with product management, marketing, sales, and IT to ensure SAGE courseware product enhancements are best serving our customers.
Report on market conditions and provide field intelligence on competitors' courseware products.
Ability to facilitate presentations with multiple internal and external stakeholders involved.
Business Travel
Sales Engineer: Business travel (up to 40%) is required for campus visits, presentations, and implementation sessions throughout the year, sometimes on short notice. Occasional travel for in-person sales meetings, department offsites, and other events will also be required.
Qualifications & Education
Education
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
Required Experience:
4+ years successful sales experience with consecutive years of goal achievement in higher education publishing, educational technology, or a comparable field.
Work experience with at least 1 Learning Management System (LMS) -- BlackBoard, Moodle, D2L, Canvas. Familiarity or experience with Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) .
Experience leading customer-facing training sessions both in person and virtually.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across departments to achieve goals and deadlines
Ability to sell digital products and establish successful first editions.
Strong work ethic (workload regularly exceeds 50 hours/week during peak selling seasons)
Must possess strong computer application skills and must possess strong working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, database applications and PowerPoint. Must have high level of proficiency working with CRM applications with experience with analyzing sales pipeline data.
Excellent written and oral communication skills including public presentation skills and ability to demonstrate technology/print products in person or electronically via applications such as Zoom.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills for identifying client needs, developing solutions, and logically organizing complex information.
Ethical and honest in all business relations
Preferred:
Understanding of: educational technology, courseware solutions platforms, learning management systems, content development, instructional design methodology, project management, online learning solutions/services.
Previous experience in project management, particularly with complex workflows, is highly preferred.
Experience as a sales specialist working with a team assisting direct sales efforts is also a major plus.
