The Director of Development for the Center for Collections and Research (Center) is responsible for successfully developing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program for the Center, including annual giving; corporate, foundation, and government support; major and planned gifts; and fundraising/friend raising events. The Director also works collaboratively and in coordination with the Cranbrook Educational Community (CEC) Advancement team. The Director reports primarily to the Chief Advancement Officer of CEC, and secondarily to the Director of the Center for Collections and Research. This position has a critical role in the successful operation of the Center and its ability to meet its financial and program goals and objectives and those of CEC. The Director of Development must be able to creatively and effectively fulfill the responsibilities of this position not only through in-person communication but also, when necessary, while working remotely and using a variety of online and virtual platforms.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising program for the Center, including short- and long-term goals and strategies for all areas of fundraising.
  • Working with CEC Director of Annual Giving and Membership, successfully direct the planning, execution, and evaluation of the annual giving program for the Center, including donor solicitations and acknowledgements and statistical reports and analyses, and ensure that the program is conducted for approved purposes in compliance with CEC policies and procedures and meets the Center’s annual fund expectations and goals.
  • Working with CEC Director of Grant Development and Administration, initiate, prepare, and submit all proposals to foundations, corporations, and government entities for grant or sponsorship support for the Center’s priority needs, including outreach, exhibits, conservation and restoration projects.
  • Collaborating with the Director of the Center and other CEC Advancement colleagues, successfully manage an individual leadership and major gifts program for the Center, by identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding these prospects and donors for the Center’s priority needs, capital projects, endowment, planned giving, and other support and to satisfactorily meet its financial goals.
  • Successfully oversee the planning, design, and launch of all fundraising events and friend raising events directly associated with the Development activities of the Center.
  • Serve as an articulate and effective spokesperson for the Center and for CEC more broadly.
  • Serve as Development staff for the Center’s Committee and Advisory Groups and ensure preparation of regular and requested Development materials and reports for the Center’s leadership and for all Center Committee meetings.
  • Work closely and effectively with CEC and Center leadership and volunteers in their solicitation efforts on behalf of the Center. Engage and provide staff training and oversight for volunteers assisting in Development activities.
  • Collaborate with the Center Director and other leadership to develop and define program priorities and initiate all fundraising activities necessary to support those priorities.
  • Use the CEC’s prospect-tracking system and other shared information resources to ensure transparency, collaboration, and accurate data on fundraising activity across CEC’s Development Offices with respect to potential prospects, prospects, and donors.
  • Collaborating with the Director of Planned Giving and other CEC Advancement colleagues, develop a planned giving program for the Center.
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility in oversight of the Center’s Development budget.
  • Maintain attendance, punctuality, and performance standards set forth in Cranbrook’s employee handbook.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the Center’s Development Coordinator.

Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field is required. A graduate degree is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible development or closely related/transferable experience, preferably with a museum, cultural or educational institution.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and high-level organizational skills.
  • Capability of working with major donors, high-level volunteers and major administrators.
  • Computer proficiency necessary, including a demonstrated ability to creatively and effectively work remotely and meet all demands of the position using virtual platforms when necessary.
  • Experience using Raiser’s Edge NXT software preferred.
  • Knowledge of government grants and governmental processes.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse constituencies and high-level volunteers and donors, including corporate and foundation officers at all levels.
  • Requires a valid Michigan driver’s license with satisfactory driving record.
