Under the direction and supervision of the Fitness Facility Manager, the Fitness Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing FitNation Membership Sales, Personal Training sales, Fitness programming, KidNation childcare and Fitness Special Events. Duties include planning, coordination, operations, management, sales, budgeting and staffing for the designated areas. This is a Recreation Department full-time position with a minimum of 40 hours per week, with evening and weekend work to be expected. Due to the extensive hours of operation work schedule may vary to cover all responsibilities.


  • Experience: Two years full-time experience in health club management preferred. Proven track record of success with meeting or exceeding monthly or yearly fitness service sales goals. Thorough knowledge of the fitness industry, fitness sales and retention strategies, facility management, fitness program management, and fitness center operations.
  • Education: Bachelors’ Degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Physical/Health Education or related field is required.
  • Skills: Must have excellent management, organizational, and sales skills. Good interpersonal communication skills and promotional skills are also essential to the position. Must have teaching and motivational skills with creativity and the ability to initiate new concepts and programs. Must be able to read people and be able to identify how our services can best meet their needs.
  • Certifications: Must be certified in CPR, First Aid and AED within 6 months. Certified Park and Recreation Professional or other professional fitness or sales related certifications also preferred.
  • Competencies: Must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation and the ability to communicate this philosophy to others. Have knowledge of current exercise trends, concepts and strategies within the fitness industry. Knowledge and experience with different offerings with membership sales strategies, personal training, group fitness, and group training.


  1. Ensure sales operations including Membership Sales, and Personal Training Sales areas are operating efficiently, being presented in a professional manner and meeting sales goals.
  2. Hire, train, evaluate, discipline, recognize and provide overall supervision to FitNation Membership Advisors and Coordinator, Personal Trainers and Coordinator, Group Exercise Instructors and Coordinator, Childcare Staff and Coordinator.
  3. Prepare program and sales budgets, sales forecasting, and fitness related procedure manuals.
  4. Actively sell fitness memberships and personal training packages to meet sales goals.
  5. Analyze programs, practices and procedures, record keeping systems, forms and personnel requirements.
  6. Develop and implement sucessful programs that are interesting and rewarding for participants.
  7. Gain knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures and ensure compliance.
  8. Purchase, maintain, and oversee the inventory of supplies and equipment in your area.
  9. Develop and monitor budget areas.
  10. Develop and implement challenging goals and objectives.
  11. Seek, interpret and implement input from the Gurnee Community and Fitness Members.
  12. Respond to all complaints and/or inquiries within five working days of receipt.
  13. Maintain excellent District interdepartmental communication through verbal and written means.
  14. Performs all other duties as required.


  1. Available for flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
  2. Perform minor repairs to equipment within your abilities
  3. Promote fitness center, classes and personal training service within the community verbally (public appearances, radio, TV), in writing (news releases, brochure, flyers), and visually (posters, sign boards, photos) as often as necessary
  4. Make recommendations to the Fitness Manager regarding purchase of equipment or facility enhancements

About 70% of the average work day would require sitting to due administrative tasks associated with managing employees, participating in meetings, compiling reports, completing work orders and responding to emails and phone calls. 30% of the average work period the employee would be on their feet performing facility inspections, interacting with staff, and interacting with customers. Active periods could require lifting up to 50lbs. Active periods could include bending, twisting, turning, and squatting with or without weights no more than 50lbs.
