Job Description
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential roles, responsibilities, and activities a candidate can expect to assume in this position are as follows:
- We hired you because we want to grow and manage the Saint Joseph Brewery distributor network. Your job is to add new distributors, work and communicate with our existing distributors to sell new and existing products, assess each distributor’s market, review, and highlight our products to the distributor and their sales force, secure and fulfill orders, negotiate distributor inventory levels and coordinate the delivery of our product.
- Not every customer served by our distributors will embrace our beer. Your job is to identify the ones that do, coordinate with our sales team to get it in front of them and grow our sales. It may be difficult to comprehend a customer who doesn’t like our beer, but its important to focus on the ones that do.
- For customers that like our beer and want to sell it to their customers, create and maintain strong, long- term relationships with them. In the long run, you’ll probably have a lot in common with them.
- Help people experience our beer by working with the distributor to identify events we should attend. You will need to register us for the events, make sure we get there on time, coordinate with our salesforce to staff the event, make us look good while we are there and make sure our team returns home safely.
- Our shared success will move us to start canning our beer. While this sales channel is different than the on-premise draft market, we will still need to work closely with our distributor to identify customers best suited to carry our product and advance the brand.
- Sample our beer outside of the brewery. If it doesn’t taste good, work with the distributor to solve the problem. Acceptable resolutions include draft system evaluation; scheduling a line cleaning; or replacing the product.
- You will not have enough time to do get everything done. We understand that, and we trust you to focus on what’s important. Please plan, manage time, and prioritize as necessary. Ability to manage multiple focuses in a timely fashion is required.
- Other responsibilities as identified and assigned.
EXPECTATIONS
- Writing and speaking is great, but you will need good technology skills with a focus on Ekos Craft Beverage
Software, Microsoft Office Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Microsoft SharePoint and various social media platforms (Facebook/Twitter/Instagram). We expect you to keep learning, so you can teach the owners and fellow employees.
- Currently, we are a small brewery. Some days you will be on your own and other days you’ll be working with the entire company. We want you to be able to do both, so we can accomplish our goals.
- Communicate regularly with the Head and Assistant Brewer regarding upcoming beer styles and be conversant on the characteristics of all the beer styles we brew.
- A lot of beer is consumed in the evening and on weekends, including events. Therefore, you may need to work these hours. Promoting and selling beer for us should be a lifestyle not a nine-to-five commitment. Solid time management and prioritizations skills are expected.
- Life is full of problems, be the one that solves them. Small problems left unresolved, usually become big problems someone else must solve later. Use your excellent communication skills to share news early, even if it’s not good news. It is both liberating and good for your career.
- You should understand every facet of Central Indiana’s craft beer scene, both from an industry point of view and from a personal understanding of what the craft industry is and can be. You should also share this information with the owners and your co-workers. It will make us more successful.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
- Valid driver's license with a responsible driving record, registered and insured vehicle, and ability to drive to and from accounts continuously.
- You must have and maintain an Indiana Alcohol Server’s Permit. We will ask to see it when we hire you, and shortly after it is supposed to be renewed.
- Physically capable of a variety of duties including but not limited to repeated lifting of 50 pounds or more, extended amounts of standing, stooping, crouching, and climbing.
- Certified Cicerone or similar training is a plus. The ability to educate people from all levels of knowledge on the merits of craft brewing and specifically Saint Joseph Brewery is a must.
- Able to demonstrate strong retail and wholesale-oriented math skills, understanding of gross profit, gross margin, pricing strategies, and discounting structures will be necessary.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word & PowerPoint), familiarity/ability to learn Ekos Craft Beverage Software and Microsoft SharePoint.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
- Compensation is based on experience and includes a salary, an annual bonus for achieving company goals, a phone allowance, a mileage allowance, and reimbursement for certain business expenses. Benefits include group health/dental/vision/disability insurance, competitive vacation time, and a very liberal product sampling program.
- Work Hours: Selling beer is a lifestyle choice – the hours will not be normal, but they will fly by.
- Employee will need to supply their own cellular phone but will receive a phone allowance.
- Employee will need to supply their own (very reliable) vehicle but will receive a mileage allowance.
- Employee will need to pay for their own expenses, but we will reimburse you for the legitimate business expenses (as defined by the IRS).
